Abstract:

The theory that motile bacteria are motivated by flagellae is questioned in this report. Instead, it is demonstrated that the movement occurs through a spiral motion of the body of the bacterium and that the capsule of the bacteria consists of spiral filaments which in stained material resemble flagellae.
