Abstract:
This report describes the results of a study to develop techniques to determine the strain-rate behavior of ablator heat shield materials at temperatures up to 7000 F. The merits of using surface heating and in-depth heating methods are discussed. Two techniques developed in this study, resistance and induction heating, are described in detail with the results of tests on prototype systems included. An analytical method to predict the temperature and stress profile of a cylindrical ablating material is also described. Author
