Abstract:

This report describes the hybrid computer simulation programs developed for use in the study of relative weapons systems effectiveness for AAFSSCOBRACOIN. A specific tactical operation was chosen as the vehicle for the study. In the operation a formation of UH1 helicopters was subject to attack from a ground weapon. In the first engagement the lift aircraft were flown without escorts to determine attrition under the ground rules established for the game. Subsequent duels, flown with single armed escorts, calculated reduction in losses and damage states. For the study, hybrid computer programs were required to simulate 1 the AAFSS aircraft and its Fire Control computer, 2 the COBRA aircraft and SAS, 3 the COIN airplane, 4 the UH1C in a landing zone approach, touch down and lift off, 5 six degree of freedom ballistics trajectories for 7.62mm, 20mm, 30mm, and 40mm weapons, and 6 a duel between a ground weapon, armed escort, and formation of lift aircraft.
