Abstract:

The objective of the work presented in this paper is to find the effect of noise bandwidth and detector parameters on the reading of a diode detector. This was done by passing the noise through three narrow-band filters of different bandwidth and detecting the resulting filtered noise by three detectors--quasi-peak, average and rms. For the quasi-peak detector the ratio of the discharge and charge time constants was varied. In direct relation to the above, three methods of characterizing and classifying typical broadband noise sources found in practice are presented. They are in accordance with 1 dependence of quasi-peak reading on bandwidth 2 effect of the bandwidth on the probability density function 3 ratio of average to rms. These three methods were found to correlate well. Author
