Abstract:
The report provides a performance characterization of electroluminescent lamps with regard to temperature. Performance of typical state-of-the-art constructions are compared to special EL lamps using experimentally modified phosphors developed through this program. A method for encapsulation of individual phosphor particles by coating their surfaces with refractory oxide materials in a fluidized bed reactor is described. The effect of operation at various temperatures -- from -50C to 100C -- on brightness, current, power, and spectral emission is described for EL lamps using coated and uncoated zinc sulphide and zinc sulpho-selenide phosphors. Improvement in operating life is reported for titanium dioxide coated zinc sulphoselenide EL phosphor. Author
