Abstract:
Work is continuing on the Phase 2 effort of the contract. Phase 2 is the design, fabrication, and test of a 300 C ambient brushless alternator using a silicon carbide rotating rectifier. During the reporting period, a complete design review was made covering fits, materials, processes, and techniques. Nickel-clad copper wire was changed to nickel-clad silver because of its availability and its reliability at the expected hot-spot temperatures. A detailed thermal analysis revealed a calculated hot-spot temperature of 950 F. The heat radiation jacket was changed from dispersion-strengthened copper alloy to zirconium copper alloy. Presently detailed drawings are being prepared on the generator and are scheduled for completion October 15, 1968. Author
