Abstract:
The report describes a VHFFM compact airborne blade antenna operating over the 24 - 76 MHz frequency range in a configuration 8 inches tall with radiation efficiencies in excess of 20 percent. The antenna is a helical monopole configuration in a subsonic aerodynamic blade package. The antenna can be autotuned over the 24 - 76 MHz frequency band with VSWRs less than 1.51.0 and efficiencies in excess of 20 percent and ranging up to 80 percent. It is capable of accepting r-f powers up to 100 Watts average. Weight of the blade antenna is 5 12 pounds a separate control module weighs 3 12 pounds. In addition to description and performance data, the report includes results of scale model studies of this antenna on both rotary and fixed wing aircraft, and its characteristics in a retransmission communication system.
