Abstract:
This review article continues the discussion from an earlier issue and deals with the operating principle, design and operation of electromagnetic wave generators, quantum generators and quantum amplifiers, and discusses the uses of masers and lasers. The defects of normal light sources, due in part to heat losses which reduce brightness, are discussed. The observation is made that the visible light spectrum alone would provide 80 million television channels if laser devices were developed for communications.
