The report summarizes the development of a numerical model that simulates dry and moist convection including the rain stage. Four, increasingly complex, phases of the convection experiment are discussed dry convection in neutral surroundings, dry moist convection in stable surroundings, moist convection in a saturated environment, and moist convection in a conditionally unstable, unsaturated environment. In all cases, the convection, constrained to slab-symmetric cells, is initiated by a single buoyant bubble. The appropriate physical equations are numerically solved. They include, in the cases of moist convection, the bulk effects of the microphysics of cloud and precipitation and result in the simulation of a precipitation roll cloud. The results of each of the phases are discussed in some detail. The last phase of the experiment uses an observed sounding as a basic state. It is found that in this case a bubble-like excess of humidity is necessary to initiate and maintain moist convection. The shortcomings of the model are discussed in relation to the results obtained from this experiment.
