A brief description is given of the Soviet Tu-134 turbojet passenger airliner, an improved version of the Tu-124A. This new medium-range 800-1600 km transport differs from the Tu-124A in that it is powered by 2 Solovev D-15 type turbojet engines located at the rear of the fuselage it also has an elevated T-type tail assembly with a large rudder and increased wing and aileron surface. The plane is 27.4 m long, 33.8 m wide and 9.9 m high, with a wing area of 88 sq m. The wings form an angle of 145 deg. with the front of the fuselage and 90 deg. at the rear. The undercarriage is in the base of the wings and houses 2 sets of 4 wheels each, with 2 more wheels in front which enable the plane to land on grass. At a speed of 225 kmhr. it requires 990 m for a landing, but an emergency drag chute is provided. The runway for takeoff is 1500 m, and the cruising altitude is 10,800 m. The weight is 16.6 metric tons empty and 34.2 metric tons maximal. The cruising speed is 800 kmhr maximum 900 and a range of 2550 km can be attained by extra tanks.
