Abstract:

A comparison is made of the theoretical and experimental performances of small, easily constructed, VLF transmitting antenna. It is a horizontal end-loaded multiple-dipole antenna which takes advantage of the earths conductivity. Radiation efficiency, input impedance, bandwidth, and long range field strength measurements were made phase and amplitude stabilities of the radiated field were measured during rainstorms and multiple-frequency resonance tuning was investigated. The radiation efficiency of the experimental dipole is modest but is increased considerably by the addition of parallel dipoles. The bandwidth is a very high 25, and the power radiation capability is far above that of any other type of VLF transmitting antenna. Author
