Abstract:

A simple exponential decay is proposed as an approximate mathematical representation for nuclear blast pressure-time profiles. The approximate pulse is compared by means of an analog computer simulation with a more sophisticated representation. The analysis indicates that the approximate pulse is useful for describing blast phenomena for overpressures up to about 1000 psi. For lower values of peak overpressure, data are presented which show points in time at which the accumulated values of the approximate impulses and the accepted model impulses are the same. The total value of the impulse for both representations is calculated and also is obtained from the analog simulation. Curves illustrating these results, along with typical computer recordings, are presented. Author
