Abstract:
Experiments with Streptomyces griseus cultures showed that growth of the aerobic micro-organisms is inhibited by ascorbic acid. Inhibition was found to be due to reduction in oxygen tension by the ascorbic acid. Double utilization of the oxygen dissolved in the medium -- for oxydation of the ascorbic acid and for respiration of the organisms -- causes a reduction in rate of transformation of ascorbic acid into dehydroascorbic acid in inoculated media as compared to control media.
