Abstract:
Five L-C feedback oscillators are analyzed in the HF frequency range to determine the variations of the output frequency and amplification factor as a function of manufacturing tolerance of the circuit integrants. First, the variance of the frequency and amplification factor of each circuit is determined by the Method of Moments computer technique. Both a vacuum tube and a transistor were used as the active integrant. Second, the distribution of the output frequency of each oscillator is statistically determined by the Monte Carlo technique. Lastly, the distribution of the variance of frequency with respect to mean frequency and tank circuit integrant tolerance values is investigated. As a result, a simple expression is derived by which the variance of the output frequency can be closely approximated. It is concluded 1 there is no significant difference between the oscillator configurations on the basis of the variance of frequency 2 variations of the active integrant parameters have a negligible effect on the variance of frequency 3 the percent tolerance of the amplification factor of the transistor is about three times that of the vacuum tube 4 the output frequency is normally distributed 5 the percent tolerance of the output frequency remains nearly constant with mean frequency 6 the variance of the output frequency can be closely approximated for any desired frequency in the HF range from the values of the tank circuit integrant tolerances. Consequently, the output frequency distribution can be completely specified. Author
