Abstract:
A study of the mechanism of the potassium ferricyanide - catalyzed chemiluminescence of luminol 5-amino-2,3-dihydro-1,4-phthalazinedione is reported. The key step in the reaction is the one-electron oxidation of the luminol dianion by ferricyanide to 5-aminophthalazine-1,4-semidione. The semidione intermediate may react with oxygen to produce electronically excited 3-aminophthalic acid and nitrogen. Alternatively, the semidione may be further oxidized by ferricyanide in a nonluminescent reaction. Author
