Abstract:

The present study reports on the results of experiments investigating the relationship between Xanthomonas oryzae and the roots of rice seedlings. When the seminal roots of rice seedling were dipped in a bacterial suspension of Xanthomonas oryzae, bacteria were found to be swarming about the roots, in particular, the root-hairs. The extent of bacterial swarming was more pronounced when the roots were dipped to their stems, in which case the bacterial suspension became clear. A bacterial layer suspension fixated in various agar media static bacterial layer was prepared at the bottom of cotton-stuffed sterilized test tube. A layer of sterilized bacteria-free agar culture medium was prepared directly on top of the static bacterial layer and sterilized seeds were then sowed. No change was observable as the roots of rice seedlings reached the static bacterial layer, from which it was concluded that the roots of rice seedlings did not supply sufficient nutrition or oxygen to produce any multiplication effects that could be observed by the naked eye.
