Abstract:
Much research in solid state physics has been motivated by the need for a better understanding of the interaction of electrons with their crystalline surroundings. Our approach to gaining a better understanding of the dynamic interactions has been to study, via the techniques of electron spin resonance spectroscopy, the processes whereby a hot paramagnetic electron one in an excited state gives its excess energy to the lattice. It does this by reorienting its spin in an externally applied magnetic field and simultaneously either creating a quantum of lattice vibrational energy Direct Process, or absorbing one of the quanta already present in the crystal and emitting one of higher energy Raman scattering process. Such processes are collectively termed spin-lattice relaxation. The primary subject of our study was the temperature dependence of spin-lattice relaxation of dilute Cr3 in cubic MgO. Author
