Abstract:

Gel filtration with Sephadex G 25 allows desalting of virus suspensions instead of the customary dialysis in cellophane membranes. The advantage of this method lies especially in the time saved and consequently in better preservation of the virus even in a small volume of material. Viruses of different molecular size and of different chemical composition, such as the foot and mouth disease virus, the Teschen virus, the virus of Newcastle disease and the pigeon pox virus were tested in different saline solutions. During the quantitative desalting process, no loss of virus was observed in these virus- salt mixtures.
