Abstract:
This report analyzes alternative modular program organizations for switch-control in projected MALLARD systems. It shows the feasibility of modular program structures that are easy to program and reprogram and that are adaptable in the field to a variety of situations and tasks. A systematic program design procedure consists of three basic steps. First, a modular software structure is selected based on functional, reliability and flexibility requirements. A compatible processor with minimal order code is then selected in order to estimate program size and processing load. The third step is a series of softwarehardware tradeoffs to determine an optimal boundary between stored program and wired logic control as well as selection of a final processor order code. Highest reliability and control flexibility is offered by a recommended program structure permitting deferrability of recognition processing of requests for service and action logic control steps initiated by the processor. In this organization the recognition and action logic are decentralized for added flexibility and processing efficiency.
