Abstract:

Melioidosis is a nosological entity which was revealed less than half a century ago. Considered at first as a variety restricted to the human species, it was soon found to be more widespread than it had first been supposed. At the same time, it has become evident that a great assortment of animals were tributary to it in a worse manner than the human species. The term zoonosis fits it better than it does any other contagious disease. Long restricted to Southeast Asia, it has, since the War in the Pacific, set up new hotbeds on other continents, while remaining practically limited to the intertropical zone of the planet. Its epidemiological form has evolved. Until recently, it was endemic-enzootic, but now it enters epizootic form and presents an economic problem that remains to be solved. Author
