Abstract:
The purpose of the program was to establish the internal roll-extrusion process and demonstrate the advantages of this technique for fabrication of one-piece large-diameter SRM motor cases. It was also intended to evaluate the response of two steel alloys D6aC and HP 9-4 to this process. Each alloy required subscale evaluation prior to full-scale fabrication. The HP 9-4 subscale study required determination of welding parameters and roll-extrusion of a 120-in.-diameter ring. The full-scale diameter ring of heat treated 2-in.-thick plate, roll-extruding it in three cold reduction passes to a 135-in.-high 120-in.-diameter cylinder, machining the end joints, and hydrotesting it at 975 psig. The D6aC subscale study used two 120-in.-diameter forged rings to establish roll-extruding parameters. The full-scale study, using those parameters and two 44-in.-high forged rings, roll-extruded two full-length 120-in.-diameter cylinders to 135-in. height in seven and five passes each, machined the end joints, and hydrotested these completed SRM cases to 975 psig.
