Abstract:

Lucigenin dimethyl diacridilium nitrate is a suitable acid-base indicator for use in volumetric analysis, as its solution, in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, emits a green colored light owing to chemiluminescence when alkalified. The transition point of lucigenin is at pH 9, i.e., the first appearance or disappearance of luminescence can be observed at this value. The new indicator can be readily applied for titrations where a dye indicator of indicator exponent pH 9 is suitable, and in addition, it also lends itself for application in colored, dark or turbid solutions. The advantage of this mode of indicating the end point of titrations by luminescence is that in these cases there is no need to resort to any method whereby instruments are used for analytical purposes. Several examples of titrations of strong and weak acids, further, of strong bases are presented and some special cases of possibilities of application are mentioned such as the determination of degrees of acidity in milk of acidity in red wine, of acid and base content in molasses.
