Abstract:
From 21 cores taken from the Tyrrhenian Sea a study has been made of the porosity, density, electrical resistivity, and sound velocity of marine sediments. The well-known linear regression of density versus porosity was checked. A relationship was also found between porosity and the electrical resistivity formation factor, which is the ratio of the bulk resistivity of marine sediment to the resistivity of interstitial water. A third degree polynomial curve was found to be the best fit for the data collected. From the electrical resistivity, which is easily measured in situ, can be derived the electrical resistivity formation factor, thus the porosity, and consequently the density, of each type of sediment.
