Abstract:

The article provides a general discussion of the drug, Meprobamate, and its uses. Although classes as a tranquilizer it is considered not to be a typical antidepressant. Its effects are mainly myorelaxer, psychosedative, and anticonvulsive. It is known to be habit forming, and serious to fatal poisoning can result from doses of 4,000 mg or more. Recommended dosages are listed. Its use is indicated in cases of neuroses with anxiety complex, psychoneurosis, and neurotic reactions, also in depressive states accompained by intense anxiety, tension, or agitation. Various possible side effects are mentioned ranging from drowsiness to suicide. While Meprobamate is widely used in military medicine for treatment of lighter neuroses and depression, a warning is given regarding addiction. Author
