Abstract:
The behavior of air flow near the exit of a constant area duct choked by friction was investigated. The duct was 12 ft 6 in long with a rectangular cross section of 0.501 by 1.124 in. Mean Mach numbers as high as 1.08 and local Mach numbers as high as 1.17 were measured at the exit. A mean Mach number of unity was observed as far as 14 in upstream of the exit. A schlieren system showed rapid property changes along the last 14 in of duct and shock waves were observed when pressure probes were inserted into the flow. Author
