Abstract:
Improvements have been made in the ultrahigh vacuum friction and wear apparatus UHVFW previously developed. A new normal force feedthrough has been constructed and installed which permits continuous variation of the normal force to in excess of 9 kg. Cleanliness of the foreline pumping system has been improved with the installation of sorption pumps to replace the mercury diffusion pump previously used. A redesign of the gas inlet system has made it possible for the first time to control the gaseous environment inside the chamber of the ultrahigh vacuum friction apparatus. Author
