Abstract:
Statistical experimental design is the name of a recent method of applying statistical techniques to the planning of test experiments. Use of this statistical approach offers practical advantages in all fields of engineering experimentation. This report presents to engineers a reasonably nontechnical description of the general characteristics of this method, its system of operation, and the results which may be expected. While it is not a guide book for direct use in planning experiments, this report describes the statisticians contribution to experimentations, defines the statistical terminology, and shows the engineer how he may reap the full benefits of this method without having to become a statistical specialist himself.
