Abstract:

One of the questions often raised about pneumatic servos is their apparent lack of stiffness to external force disturbances. It does not seem that a cylinder full of gas could be nearly so stiff as a cylinder full of hydraulic oil. However, when the cylinder full of gas has a servo loop around it, the corrective action of the servo loop must be considered. The transfer function from external force to piston displacement for pneumatic servo is derived. The servo is considered to be a piston and cylinder driven by an ideal closed-center valve. Both position and pressure feedback in combination are considered. Linearized equations are used and the validity of the results depends on the applicability of the linearized equations to the particular situation studied. Author
