Abstract:

Test 14-404-B1-SD was the fourth firing of the D series propulsion system MA-2 engine and the first multistage, long duration firing of this engine. The booster and sustainer engine were cutoff by the engine timers. Booster duration was 99.39 seconds and sustainer duration was 279.28 seconds. These times are from sustainer flight lockin relay. After 2.71 seconds of solo operation, vernier cutoff was initiated by a chart observer when sustainer lube oil pressure dropped normally at sustainer cutoff. The chart observer was not aware that the sustainer cutoff had occurred. Fuel tank pressure was high immediately prior to the test due to a leak in the pressure programmer fuel tank pressure regulator. The error ratio demodulator signal of the propellant utilization malfunctioned due to a broken capacitor lead in the computer-comparator. The system was operating open loop for this test. Author
