Abstract:

The report describes the organization of the Ship Division of the National Physical Laboratory, the major establishment in the UK engaged in ship research and model testing for the merchant marine. Details are given of the new circulating water channel or flume recently commissioned and of some of the work carried out on it, including a new method of flow visualization. There is a general account of the research being carried out in the Division, particularly that directed towards a resolution of the problem of model-ship correlation. The use of new materials for model hulls is described, together with the development of methods of cutting hull and propeller models by numerically-controlled machines. Author
