FADING IN ULTRASHORT-WAVE PROPAGATION THROUGH THE TROPOPAUSE.

The phenomenon of the influence of the untrashort-wave transmission from the balloon transmitter to the ground was observed in the frequencies of 150 Mc Weissenau, 400 Mc Payerne and 1600 Mc Berlin. Half of the failures of the transmission in Payerne and Weissenau occurred directly at the tropopause, half of them between 4 km below and 8 km above the tropopause, with the maximum at 2 km above the tropopause. In Berlin, however, the aggregation of failures is lacking directly at the tropopause. If in the analysis we include the meteorological data at the height of the effects, we find in most cases a pronounced inhomogeneity in the behavior of any parameter with height, either a reversal or a strong gradient in the temperature variation tropopause or a strong increase or decrease of the wind speed e.g., at the edges of a jet or a considerable change in the direction of the wind. The distribution of the failures over the seasons does not show any characteristic relationship. A slight increase in frequency of occurrence in March and September might be real and provides an indication in regard to the stratospheric wind reversal during these months, namely from west wind to east wind in the spring and vice versa in the fall.
