Abstract:

The report presents test results on the structural vulnerability of aircraft exposed to small arms fire projectile impact damage. The test program was divided into two phases 1 investigation of the immediate effect of the projectile impact damage and 2 determination of the residual strength and fatigue life remaining in the damaged structure. The test results indicated that fracture mechanics theory is applicable to the strength analysis of projectile damaged structures and that the possibility of catastrophic failure in current aircraft type structures damaged by small arms fire seems very remote.
