Abstract:

After vernier cut-off, the re-entry vehicle is unlatched, and two rockets retard the airframe, permitting the re-entry vehicle to proceed independently. Since the afterbody of the re-entry vehicle extends aft into the airframe a distance of about three feet, the retarding rockets must be so positioned that the motion they impart to the airframe does not cause it to collide with the re-entry vehicle.
