Abstract:

Stability considerations for conducting, viscid, hydromagnetic flow are reviewed, as far as these are available in the literature. A discussion of small flow perturbations for static and stationary systems, and the influence of thermal perturbations is given by some brief examples. It is pointed out that the application of magnetic fields to conducting fluids may increase stability in some cases as well as reduce it. This will depend upon the particular boundary conditions, flow fields, and the strength of the magnetic fields. The critical Taylor numbers, Reynolds numbers, and Rayleigh numbers are given for the characteristic examples of curved channel flow, Couette flow, Poiseuille flow, and static and rotating liquids under the influence of thermal perturbations.
