Abstract:
A manufacturing method based on a process previously developed at Hughes Aircraft Company was successfully scaled-up and optimized for producing pilot plant quantities of fully aromatic curable, fusible and soluble polyphenylene. The optimum stoichiometry involved the use of biphenyl meta-terphenyl, AlCl3, CuCl2 in molar ratio of 1.51.54.04.0. Using p-xylylene glycol catalyzed with p-toluene sulfonic acid as the curing agent, the polyphenylene resins were converted into lacquers. Ablative test results obtained in hyperthermal environments created by plasma arcs using reconstituted air plasma showed that the resin made by the candidate manufacturing method was comparable to those made in the bench-scale studies.
