Trace levels of nitrogen compounds have been found to increase the rate of deposit formation. Three pure nitrogen compounds, i.e., 2,5 dimethylpyrrole, indole and 2 ethylpyridine, increased the rate of deposit formation at 300F up to a factor of approximately 10 at the 1000 ppm N level. Tests at lower nitrogen levels indicate that the rate of deposit formation exhibits a square root dependence on nitrogen concentration. The effect of several commercially available antioxidants on the deposit formation tendency of jet fuels at empty wing tank conditions has been evaluated. Pure compound studies were also continued. A highly branched C12 paraffin i.e., 2,2,4,6,6 pentamethylheptane was slightly more deletereous toward deposit formation than n-dodecane. The deposit formation tendency of n-decane was strongly inhibited by the addition of diphenylmethane.
