Abstract:

There are many engineering problems associated with fluids in zero gravity fields. Knowledge of the spatial configuration of the fluid is required for solutions to many of these problems. The configuration at any time is a function of many things, including surface tension, tank shape, liquid-to-volume ratio, heat transfer, mechanical disturbances, etc. In this work the equilibrium configuration of a fluid with given interface free energy relations in the absence of a gravity field is considered. The absence of unbalanced forces mechanical or thermal is assumed. This is not to imply that the unbalanced forces are not important, rather the determination of the equilibrium configuration may be used as a starting point for consideration of the thermal and mechanical perturbations.
