Abstract:

A preliminary design analysis of the lunar voyage heat loads to a liquid hydrogen tank and of methods for minimizing hydrogen boil-off loss due to these heat loads is presented. The elements of space and lunar heating and the use of insulation for reduction of heat loads and extension of storage time are evaluated for typical hydrogen tanks. The derived data of boil-off and storage time are shown as a function of the insulation conduction parameter kl. Radical methods for negating boil-off losses including thermoelectric cooling and hydrogen solidification are also examined. Author
