The purpose of the research is to improve the fabricating techniques and procedures for low frequency 100-500 kHz and medium frequency 3-10 MHz resonators in order to decrease the aging rates commonly encountered and to increase the reliabilities and Q values of the respective types. Causes of anomalous aging behavior of quartz resonators and of activity dips will be investigated by x-ray diffraction and other methods and a comparison of the relative aging rates of natural, cultured regular grade, cultured optical grade, and swept cultured quartz resonators will be made. In the latter case an annular electrode configuration will be used for excitation in order to diminish the influence of the plating material. Improvements of shock resistance of resonators bonded by the ultrasonic methods now utilized will be undertaken. Benefits in aging or resonators to be derived from employment of oil free pumping systems and cold welded containers will be examined. Author
