The results of experiments made to determine the effects of common control system nonlinearities on human compensatory tracking are presented. The nonlinearities were control system friction, friction and preload, friction and spring gradient, and control velocity limiting. Tests were made with three different controlled elements. Force-displacement nonlinearities had essentially no effect on tracking performance. Of the nonlinearities which were tested only control velocity limiting was shown to result in degraded performance. There was no evidence of self-sustained oscillations in the operator-machine systems. Author
