Abstract:

Ballistic limit curves for a series of 6061-T6 aluminum bumper configurations have been generated for the velocity range 5.7 kmsec to 7.4 kmsec. Projectiles employed were aluminum spheres with a nominal mass of 46 mg. Five bumper thicknesses and five bumper hull plate spacings were investigated. The optimum bumper thickness for a minimum weight configuration was determined to be 25 of the projectile diameter. No dependence of the ballistic limit on impact velocity was detected over the velocity range considered. The most effective shielding situation was that in which the bumper and projectile debris was shattered into the smallest fragments. Author
