Safety hazards of the Sheridan weapon system include residue, toxic gas, and flareback. The existing bore evacuator is not capable of overcoming these conditions. Earlier engineer design tests indicated that the CO2 scavenger system, functioning with a relocated turret blower, would satisfactorily overcome the hazardous condition. A production system was provided and tested at Aberdeen Proving Ground from March through May 1967. The tests showed that, while the scavenger system did not in all cases overcome the residue and toxic gas problem, it is a significant improvement over existing systems. On this basis it is recommended that the CO2 scavenger system be considered satisfactory as an interim retrofit item for the Sheridan weapon system. Author
