A technique for injecting small pulses of mercury vapor has been studied. Its low energy requirements 0.005 joules per pulse, long life 4 times 10 to the 7th power pulses demonstrated, flexibility in mass flow 10 to the -7th power to 0.00002 gramspulse, permissible repetition rates up to 1000 pulses per second, and simplicity have been demonstrated. In addition, the use of various diagnostic tools and theoretical computations have lead to a semiquantitative understanding of injector operation. Operation of a prototype pulsed microthruster using the mercury vapor pulses as propellant was accomplished. Author
