Abstract:

A series of disc electrodes was substituted for the first drift tube in the UHF tube containing a magnetron injection gun so that the potential profile at the gun exit could be adjusted more accurately. This was found to have a negligible effect on the noise figure of the device, while the magnetic field distribution continued to control the noise figure as reported previously. Time-periodic solutions of the coupled Boltzmann equation and circuit equation are considered. The appropriate equations for this case are derived under the assumption that only a finite number of harmonics need be retained, and an iterative method of solving these equations is suggested. Instead of the partial differential equations in two independent variables space and time, which are required in transient calculations, the resulting equations are only ordinary differential equations. This may be expected to lead to some economy in computing time when only the periodic solutions are of interest.
