The report describes the results achieved to date as part of a research and development program that will lead to devices that provide an essentially lossless, electronically controllable real time delay of microwave signals. The delay mechanism will probably involve the conversion of the electromagnetic energy to be delayed into magnetoelastic energy although magnetostatic and pure elastic techniques will also be acceptable. The shape of the internal magnetic field required to obtain dispersionless delay is calculated. The shape of the internal magnetic field of a YIG rod inserted in ring-shaped polycrystalline YIG sleeves is computed in order to match the field shape required for dispersionless delay as closely as possible. It is shown that phase variations can be measured to an accuracy of better than one rf period, permitting calculation of the group delay. Author
