Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the feasibility of using fluid flywheels for nutation damping of large manned spinning space vehicles. A model space vehicle was selected, and a flywheel loop and pump analysis was conducted to define the best loop configuration and fluid-pump combination. Operational feasibility, weight and power requirements of the final system were determined by both analysis and analog simulation. It was concluded that a fluid flywheel damper system is both feasible and competitive.
