The objectives of evaluating the E-15 arresting gear in the split deck-edge-sheave configuration were to determine performance characteristics, operational limits, reliability and component service life, arresting-gear calibration with aircraft, and recycle time. Roll-in and taxi-in arrestments of aircraft weighing from 14,500 to 70,000 pounds were conducted ON-CENTER and at 25- and 40-foot OFF-CENTER distances at various engaging speeds. Arresting-hook and purchase-tape load limits were reached, and with the exception of one aircraft, no longitudinal-deceleration limit was attained. During 40-foot OFF-CENTER arrestments, the F-4 aircraft was limited to engaging speeds below 150 knots because of skin damage as a result of pendant dynamics however, under emergency conditions the damage is considered to be tolerable.
