Abstract:
Four Ballistic Drop Units BDUs were subjected to combined high-temperature static load tests which simulated the most severe F-111A flight loads. The BDUs tested were BDU-8B, BDU-12B, BDU-18B, and BDU-19B. The BDU-19B sustained no visible mechanical damage when subjected to 150 percent limit load in Test Condition 1. The rear suspension lug of the BDU-12B became disengaged from the MAU-12 Bomb Rack at 93 percent limit load in test Condition 3 and a structural-steel simulated bomb rack was substituted for the remainder of the testing. The BDU-12B sustained no visible mechanical damage, when subjected to 125 percent limit load in each of the three different test conditions. The BDU-8B and the BDU-18B sustained no visible mechanical damage when subjected to Test Conditions 2 and 3. The nose sections of both the BDU-8B and the BDU-18B collapsed at 124 percent and 110 percent limit load, respectively, in Test Condition 4.
