Three butyl-rubber-base and one vinyl-foam-base tapes were evaluated. Each tape was used to seal seams and joints in a 60-in.-diam, 5-gage bolted structural-plate pipe section subjected to external hydrostatic pressures up to 60 psi for periods ranging from 1 to 28 days. Measurements were made of the leakage in each case. A test was also performed to determine the effect of external pipe deflection on leakage. It was concluded that although some gasketing tapes produce adequate watertightness in structures, changes in design of the structures themselves will be necessary if complete watertightness is required.
