Abstract:

BEACON denotes a set of programs organized to form a computing tool to study defense of the continental United States against strategic nuclear attack. The purpose is to obtain a feel for the possibilities of newer technological concepts useable in continental defense. Thus, BEACON has been designed toward embracing any set of potentially interesting interacting systems of the near future. The method of procedure has been to concentrate on fundamental logical or physical processes of attack and defense on a global scale and to keep the structure modular, replaceable, and open-ended.
